COMMUNITY

ALTERNATIVE FAMILIES

NARRATIVE DESIGN

I Grew Up Fine focuses on the pro-family narrative being actively omnipresent across Singapore's media imagery, and how it impacts the self-perception of children in single-parent families.

This project serves as a social commentary into existing oversaturation of the ideal two-parent family as the social building blocks of the nation, while also acting as a platform of empowerment for single-parent children by highlighting the strengths from their experiences, and recognising diverse family structures by celebrating non-parental caregivers in the bigger community.

GUERILLA CAMPAIGN

NARRATIVE

SOCIAL COMMENTARY

The first deliverable serves as a social commentary on how pro-family narratives are populated within local produced media, typically in out-of-home advertising as well as social media. Hence, pro-family images collected across Singapore’s media history are used as a way to ‘censor’ the narratives of single-parent children in a series of banners placed in family-friendly public spaces that appear to showcase a positive message about family, but through scanning of QR codes will lead to a mircrosite that unveils the facade to showcase the full real stories of people who grew up in such family structures. The maps included in the stories also provide an immersive experience for readers to envision the geographical context of each person's testimony.

PUBLICATION

NARRATIVE

SOCIAL COMMENTARY

(Non-Parental Communications) is a speculative service that drops mailer sets to letterboxes that are similar to unsolicited mailers received from the government. This acts as a second step to social commentary on how pro-family messaging is spread, and engages single-parent children in the community through a series of publications directed at a more inclusive society for all families, and a step towards appreciating non-parental caregivers as well.
