Food & the Migrant Diaspora

Soong Li-Shya

Food and the Migrant Diaspora explores how food can serve as a mediator between Singaporeans and the Bangladeshi Migrant Community. Often, perceptions of migrant workers are limited to their identities as labourers, resulting in minimal interaction due to entrenched stereotypes. This project aims to address and level the gap by delving into the cultural identities of migrant workers through the lens of food and transnationalism, facilitating interactions and culture exchange between the two communities over food-sharing activities.

‘Ranna Banna’ refers to cooking or food preparation in Bengali. The term combines “ranna,” which means cooking, and “banna,” which means making or creating. Together, they denote the activity of preparing food.

Ranna Banna is a food-sharing activity aimed at facilitating cultural exchange between Singaporeans and Bangladeshi Migrant Workers. The objectives of this activity include encouraging an active exchange between both communities to share and learn about each other's cultures, providing a platform for interaction, and testing the effectiveness of food-sharing activities in mediating cultural exchange and interactions between the two communities.
