Exploring the influence of olfactory stimuli on visual memory enhancement in Korean elderly individuals with pre-dementia stage

RQ1: How does olfactory sense contribute to our recalling old memories back?
RQ2: How can olfactory memory be turned into visual memory?

Gihyang is a project that explores the impact of olfactory stimuli on enhancing visual memory in Korean elderly individuals who are over 50 years old. Even though forgetfulness becomes more prevalent due to various biological and physical factors, each of us harbours a particular memory that we wish to preserve and resist forgetting. By focusing on the connection between the olfactory sense and the memory system, this project aims to transform olfactory memories into visual memories.

A Book on Korean elders memories

PUBLICATION

Emotions and memories in human beings are directly influenced by, and linked to, the olfactory sense, in other words the sense of smell. The part of the brain that processes sense of smells, especially the hippocampus and amygdala, plays a powerful role in intricately and strongly bridging connections with our recollection of past memories. As time passes and we age, forgetfulness becomes more prevalent due to various biological and physical factors. Nevertheless, each of us harbours a particular memory that we wish to preserve and resist forgetting. I aim to delve into the impact of olfactory stimuli on enhancing visual memory in Korean elderly individuals, focusing on investigating the connection between the olfactory sense and the memory system, with the potential goal of transforming olfactory memories into visual memories. The book contains 8 personal stories about my interviewee that goes through their precious memories about experiences on recalling those memories by our olfactory sense.
Every chapter includes a scent that is related to the story, that will greatly help as you read along.
