Behind The Smoke & Mirrors is an Investigation on the role of design activism as a catalyst in bridging communication gaps between NGOs and potential teen smokers who have been desensitized by advertisements in Jakarta. The objective of this project is to convey to the NGO, Lentara Anak, the potential of leveraging design as a strategic asset in response to the tobacco industry's utilisation of design to its advantage. By recognising the power of design, NGOs can harness its capabilities as a formidable tool in their endeavours.

WORKSHOP
Terpikat: Kenapa pada Ngebul? ['Hooked: Why do People Smoke?'] is a collection of drawings created by teenagers from Jakarta between the ages of 14 and 17. The sketches depict what teenagers believe influences other teenagers to smoke.
This workshop was designed to intimately understand the motivations and influences behind teenage smoking, empowering us to connect with and comprehend the younger generation on a deeper level. Therefore, when creating the other deliverables, it addresses their concerns.

Rokok-Rokok Ria
Subliminal Advertising through Traditional Street Vendors
DESIGN OUTCOME
PHYSICAL PACKAGING
EDITORIAL
This combines “rokok” (cigarette) with “warung ria” which means “happy warung.” It sounds playful and suggests a place where cigarettes are readily available (though not necessarily promoting it).
Indonesia’s retail landscape is dominated by ‘warungs’, where cigarette packets are often displayed near the cashier alongside sweets or snacks. This creates a subconscious association, especially among teens, linking smoking with food. Warungs hold deep social significance, further amplifying the impact of cigarette visibility. While there are regulations to restrict tobacco advertising, enforcement can be inconsistent, contributing to the pervasive presence of cigarettes in retail settings. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate the impact of subliminal advertising and protect Indonesian youth fromw the influence of smoking. This was made to show how easily it is to confuse cigarettes and snacks in a teen's perspective.
