COMMUNITY

GRAPHIC DESIGN

While the prevailing societal norms often portray special needs pets as pitiable and having low quality of living leading to the increment of misjudged euthanasia and abandonment, this research seeks to change that perception by making a change to the normality that no longer serves the community. The research utilises the real life examples of caregivers interviewed and shadowed to draw connections between the involvement and interconnection between empathy supported through design thinking, and adaptations as part of the framework to successful cohabitation between caregivers and special needs pets. Therefore, demonstrating how empathy in design thinking enhances cohabitation conditions with special needs pets to provide them a second chance at life in Singapore.

Therefore, the selected design outcome for this study will entail collaboration with Andy from Optimus Animal Rehabilitation to organize a unique three-day event in Singapore. This event aims to cater to caregivers of special needs pets, as well as Singaporeans who own or have an interest in pets, providing them with valuable insights into the subject.

The event will take place at a pet-friendly cafe generously sponsored by OMD Cafe and Bar. The cafe space will be transformed into a handicapped-pet friendly environment and a secure educational hub for caregivers to connect and form a supportive community.

An exhibition stand has been crafted specifically for this occasion and will be positioned within the cafe space to enlighten patrons about the modifications being implemented and to offer guidance on pet care.

Throughout the event, workshops will be conducted to address specific issues and bridge gaps within the community, ensuring that attendees leave with practical knowledge and solutions.

This project aims to demonstrate that special needs pets can thrive and enjoy a high quality of life when provided with appropriate support and environment.
The event serves as a platform to raise awareness about the caregiving required for special needs pets, aiming to familiarize others with this lifestyle and foster acceptance of this new norm.
