"Kaki Lima Depan Rumah" is an introspective endeavor that delves into the lives of street vendors in Muara Karang, North Jakarta. This project is a continuation of the dissertation "Five Feet Fights for Street," which explores the impact of gentrification on the informal communal hubs that epitomize urban vitality, such as street vendors. Expanding on the theme of gentrification, this initiative offers a personalized narrative, rooted in my 17 years of living and growing up as a Chinese-Indonesian minority in the area. Although street vendors were a peripheral presence in my childhood, this project has been a bridge to reconnect with this overlooked experience through a designer’s lens. It is an exploration into the community's essence, recognizing street vendors as not merely disturbance and nuisance but also integral threads in the social and cultural tapestry of Muara Karang, defining the neighbourhood's unique character.

The Muara Karang's Kaki Lima Way is an experiential personal journey compiling a variety of five-foot vendors who are operating within the neighbourhood of Muara Karang area in Northern Jakarta. Muara Karang itself is a very famous area known to many people of Jakarta. Growing up in this area, there were no days passed that is dull and boring. Especially, the noise of street vendors passing by my house. At any time of the day, there would be clanking noise, wood-knocking noises, and even vendors shouting as they walk pass by to let people know of their presence. They were the ones making the spirit of Muara Karang come alive every single day, whether that be during day or night time.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Kaki Lima Depan Rumah is a publication collating the snippets of stories, conversations, and experiences of the 7 street vendors in this project. This part of the project is aimed to preserve their stories and at the same time reveal a personal perspective from the Kaki Lima experience journey as part of reliving the childhood experience that was missed growing up in Muara Karang. This publication also reveals how street vendors not only sell to make a living, but also act as the catalyst in establishing the area's identity, culture, and livelihood.
